Corruption is a huge problem in Ukraine and there are no hopes that it will be curbed in a short time, said heads of the European affairs committees of the Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian and Polish parliaments during their meeting in Riga on May 23rd, cites LETA.

The Baltic and Polish representatives said in a press conference following the meeting that these countries are among Ukraine’s greatest supporters. Still, patience will be needed to see progress in Ukraine’s reform process.

"Ukraine will not take up speed, therefore it is important to keep attention and pressure on Ukrainian politicians so that the words and promises are implemented," said Latvian parliament European affairs committee chairwoman Lolita Cigane (Unity).

In her opinion, the changes can be brought by reforms in the court system. Estonian parliament European affairs committee chairman Kalle Palling agreed, explaining that solving of the problems will take time, but there are hopes that the young politicians will be able to change the situation.

Meanwhile, a member of the Polish Senate's committee for foreign and European affairs, Piotr Wach, was skeptical, saying that it is unrealistic to expect that corruption will be curbed in Ukraine any time soon. "We have to understand it and measure the progress step by step," he said.
