Ambassador: Lithuanian sentenced in Russia for spying won't appeal ruling

BC, Vilnius, 26.04.2016.Print version
Yevgeny Mataitis, a Lithuanian citizen sentenced by a Russian court to 13 years in prison for spying, will not appeal the ruling, Lithuania's ambassador to Moscow said, cites LETA/BNS.

"Mataitis' private layer has confirmed that they will not appeal the court's decision and will wait to see what steps Lithuania's authorities take," Remigijus Motuzas, the ambassador, told BNS by telephone from Moscow.

Russia's law enforcement bodies say that Mataitis, a reserve naval officer who also has Russian citizenship, agreed to supply information to the Lithuanian military intelligence about the Russian Armed Forces.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said on Apr. 13 that Mataitis had been found guilty of state treason and sentenced to 13 years in jail.

Mataitis was the second Lithuanian citizen sentenced by a Russian court for spying in a month.

A Moscow court in March sentenced Aristidas Tamosaitis to 12 years in prison for working for Lithuania's military intelligence.

The Lithuanian National Defense Ministry would not comment on either case.

A Russian national, who Lithuania's intelligence service says is a sworn officer of the FSB, was detained in Lithuania in May 2015.

It was announced on the last day of 2014 that a Lithuanian Air Force officer had been detained on suspicions of supplying classified information to an unnamed foreign country. A person whom the officer allegedly supplied the information to was also detained.
