During an annual conference of prosecutors on last year's results and work priorities for 2016, Prosecutor General Eriks Kalnmeiers said that there was in increase in the number of drug dealers detained last year, but added that this does not mean there has been an increase in the number of drug users in the country, informs LETA.

In 2015, 251 instances of persons selling or distributing illegal narcotics was registered, compared to 171 such instances in 2014.

Meanwhile, there were 2,993 drug-related crimes registered in Latvia last year, compared to 2,660 in 2014.

Furthermore, 1,695 pre-trial criminal processes were included for drug related crimes last year, involving a total of 1,817 persons.

Commenting last year's results in this area, Kalnmeiers said that there was an improvement in police work. ''We see an increase in the number of persons detained for drug related crimes because of improvement in police work in this area. But I believe there has not been a rise in drug users in the country,'' he said.
