Advocate: Estonia's Constitution mustn't be changed because of civil partnership law

Sworn advocate Juri Raidla, one of the creators of Estonia's Constitution, stressed on Friday that the Constitution must not be changed in the name of everyday politics, Aktuaalne Kaamera newscast of the public broadcaster ERR reports, cites LETA.

Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) announced in the midst of talks regarding the implementing provisions of the gender neutral Registered Partnership Act that it wants to initiate amendments to the Constitution which state that marriage is a union between a man and a woman.

According to Raidla the Constitution is at the very top of the hierarchy of laws, after which there is a wide gap and only then come the rest of the laws.

He added that in the secular world the Constitution is like the Bible in the ecclesiastical world. "This means that the Constitution is not a toy," Raidla said and added that amendments to the Constitution should not be used as political tools to make agreements in everyday politics.

According to Raidla it seems that there are three issues on the table at the moment in the government – the civil partnership law, a position in the European Court of Auditors and the Constitution. Bringing the Constitution into such a context of everyday politics devaluates the Constitution and damages its reputation, he added.
