Latvian Saeima passes National Security Concept

BC, Riga, 27.11.2015.Print version
On November 26th, Latvian Saeima approved the National Security Concept prepared by the cabinet of Ministers and endorsed by the National Security Council, informs LETA.

The concept has also been approved by the National Security Committee.

The summary of the concept says it comprises eight threat areas and Latvia's priorities for each of these areas. The eight threat areas are internal security threats, foreign intelligence and security services, military threats, threats to the unity of civil society, threats to Latvian information space, threats to the national economy, threats posed by international terrorism, and cyber threats.

The priorities in tackling these threats include bolstering Latvia's borders and defense capacities, judiciary capacity, crisis management and refugee policy upgrades, reducing radicalization risks.

In order to counter the threat posed by foreign intelligence and security services, Latvia will focus on the development of national security authorities, counterintelligence and preventive measures, protection of classified information. Protection of the information space requires further development of the media, reducing the effect of Russia's information space, while prevention of threats to the national economy requires development of external economic policy and control of foreign investments, security of energy supplies, and diversification of transit flows.

A new version of the National Security Concept, prepared by the government and revised by the National Security Council, is passed by Saeima at least once during its term in office.
