Benefits for refugees in Latvia will be reduced to between EUR 130 to 150 per month

The proposed monthly benefits for refugees, which currently is at EUR 256, will be reduced to between EUR 130 to 150 per month, Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) told Latvian Television today, cites LETA.

The prime minister said that benefits for refugees could be less than EUR 256 per month, but this sum will not be so small that the refugees will be forced to become involved in criminal activities.

Straujuma emphasized that she does not wish to mention a specific sum at the moment, but added that the benefits for refugees could be a bit above EUR 128.06 per month, which is the poverty-line level of income for persons.

Asked whether this means that the refugee benefits could be less than EUR 150 per month, Straujuma confirmed this, but added that more discussions will take place on specific amounts. The prime minister also said that the relatively low benefit allowance will be one of the factors which should motivate refugees to find paid jobs.

As reported, the coalition earlier this month discussed the benefit's sum, and there were no objections to reducing it. Only the interior and welfare ministries spoke up, reminding that a consultation with Brussels is necessary on whether such a move [decreasing the benefit] does not run counter to EU regulations and directives.

At this time, the benefit for refugees is set at EUR 256.
