More people register Latvian citizenship due to transitional provisions in law

400 persons have registered for Latvian citizenship in 2015 due to transitional provisions in the Citizenship Law, which now allows non-citizens, who have acquired elementary or high school education before October 1, 2012, to apply for Latvian citizenship without passing a language exam, reports LETA, according to the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

The Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs says that due to transitional provisions in the Citizenship Law, a total of 296 persons applied for Latvian citizenship in 2014.

 

From January to October 1, 2015, a total of 400 persons registered for Latvian citizenship. In the respective period last year, the number was 219.

 

According to transitional provisions in the Citizenship Law, non-citizens had the opportunity to register Latvian citizenship without passing a language exam, had they acquired elementary or high school education in the official state language before October 1, 2013.
