''It is important for the UN Security Council to continue to follow along and discuss the situation in Ukraine, even though unfortunately it is not able to make sure the UN Charter is being observed and solve the situation in a peaceful manner,'' Vejonis said.

As LETA was informed by the Presidential Press Service, the officials also discussed matters related to climate change.

Vejonis also emphasized the UN secretary-general's role in the creation of effective peace keeping missions around the world, and pointed out that Latvia is preparing to participate in its first UN peace keeping mission next year in Mali.

The president will return to Latvia on October 3.
