Of 66 suspects in the 13 January case, five defendants currently are in Ukraine. As Lithuania's Prosecutor General's Office notes, although Ukraine has completely satisfied the legal assistance requests of Lithuania, the extradition of the suspects is impossible, informs LETA/ELTA.

"Following Article 25 of the Ukrainian Constitution and other legislation of Ukraine, a citizen of Ukraine cannot be extradited to another state," the Prosecutor General's Office said, adding that Belarus and Russia have refused to cooperate with Lithuania's law enforcement institutions.

However, all defendants have been issued European arrest warrants.

In 1991, when the Soviet troops attempted to take over the Vilnius TV Tower, Lithuanian Radio and Television Centre, and the Press House building, 14 armless freedom defenders died.

The 13 January case consists of a total of 700 volumes, charges have been brought against people who at the time held leading positions in the Soviet Union's (USSR) structures of force and members of the Communist Party – the interior minister of the USSR, the head of the Committee for State Security of the USSR, the commander of Alfa special forces unit and other lower ranking officers who held leading positions. Two suspects are located in Lithuania.
