Several dozen people gather in Riga to protest against advent of refugees in Latvia

BC, Riga, 05.08.2015.Print version
Several dozen people have gathered by the government building in Riga yesterday to participate in a protest against the arrival of new immigrants in Latvia, reports LETA.

The protestors were holding placards with slogans "No To NATO Victims In Latvia!", "Latvian Top Officials – Before International Courts Now!", and others.

One of the protestors was speaking into a megaphone explaining the purpose of the rally, indicating that people are against the government's policy of accepting refugees in Latvia, as well as against "Latvia's participation in foreign wars."

The rally was observed by several police officers. Some people were filming the event, while occasional passersby are not showing any particular interest in the rally.

The demonstration yesterday near the Cabinet building concluded with the crowd of about 1,000 strong going to the Freedom Monument to sing the national anthem, as requested by organizers.

The rally, called by the nationalist party VL-TB/LNNK to protest the pending arrival of Syrian immigrants, proceeded peacefully. There was one arrest, however. A man with a dubious placard had insisted on joining the rally despite objections from organizers. Police asked him to leave, but the man resisted.

Organizers feel that they got their point across – that people have the right to determine what happens in their own country.
