Spelling of Lithuanian first and last names in non-Lithuanian characters has not been made legal yet, but courts are already issuing rulings, which allow spelling one's name with the letter W, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaro zinios.

This was yesterday's decision made by judge Gintaras Seikalis from the Vilnius City District Court. Yesterday, the Vilnius City District Court satisfied a request of a female applicant who wanted to change the spelling of her last name in her marriage certificate.

The Vilnius Civil Registry Division was obliged to issue a new copy of the woman's marriage certificate where her last name is spelled with the letter W, as in the last name of the applicant's Belgian husband – Pauwels. Such ruling was issued by judge Gintaras Seikalis () The public body European Foundation of Human Rights, led by Polish Malgozata Runevic-Vardyn, helped the Lithuanian-Belgian couple to get prepared for the suit.

Lithuanian linguist Kazimieras Garsva points out that this institution, related to Valdemar Tomasevski and his political party, continuously urges citizens to ignore laws.
