Latvian coalition agrees to start negotiations on new aid program for Greece, but skeptical about new bailout

BC, Riga, 17.07.2015.Print version
The ruling coalition in Latvia agreed today that the government will delegate Finance Minister Janis Reirs (Unity) to participate in eurozone finance ministers' talks on Greek bailout, reports LETA.

Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) told media representatives that the coalition has agreed to authorize the government to begin negotiations. It is also said that the finance minister will regularly inform the government about the course of these meetings, as well as about Greece's progress in implementing the reforms.

The coalition partners agreed unanimously that the new loan program would have to be approved by Saeima. At the same time, they pointed out that the coalition is skeptical about the new bailout.

The issue could be reviewed by Saeima at the end of August.

As reported, eurozone leaders unanimously agreed earlier this week to a new bailout program for Greece. The new program proposes a massive aid package of up to EUR 86 million. The Bank of Latvia's advisor Andris Strazds commented in a radio interview that if the new bailout program for Greece was confirmed, Latvia could have to guarantee up to EUR 240 million as part of it.
