Civil partnership amendments submitted to Lithuania's Seimas

BC, Vilnius, 02.07.2015.Print version
On July 1st 2015, the Government of Lithuania approved the amendments to the Civil Code, as prepared by the Justice Ministry, informs LETA/ELTA.

The new amendments would ensure and regulate rights and duties of a man and a woman who are living together and creating family relationships with each other but who are not formally married to each other. The amendments would also protect the interests of these persons and their children.

The draft law defines partners as two adult and able persons who are not relatives to each other, not married to each other and not partners of other persons.

It is proposed to establish a common rule under which all assets, acquired in the names of both partners or in the name of one of the partners during the period of partnership, would be considered to be commonly shared partial property, except for personal assets of partners.

The law amendments must be approved by the Seimas.
