The Heads of State and Government of 66 EU, Latin American and the Caribbean countries are meeting today and tomorrow in Brussels to agree on the opportunities for cooperation in various fields.

Laimdota Straujuma and Rafael Correa welcomed the opportunity to discuss the issues of bilateral and multi-lateral cooperation within the framework of the Summit.

During the discussion, both officials focused on education - a driver for development of every country. The Prime Minister welcomed the work of the Latin American Studies Centre at the Riga Technical University that cooperates with Yatsche University of Ecuador.

The parties emphasized that Europe and Latin America have to develop cooperation in the fields of science, technology transfer, economy and trade.

The President of Ecuador praised Latvia for the fact that its people care for the environment. "You have accomplished a lot in respect of environmental issues, and may be a good example for other countries. Latvia is a very beautiful country; I can say it after seeing the photos, and your care for the environment is praiseworthy. I am puzzled by the fact that there are still countries in the world, which have not signed the Kyoto Protocol. Environmental issues are a global challenge, and we all need to join forces to deal with them," said Rafael Correa. L. Straujuma noted that the upcoming Climate Change Conference to be held at the end of the year in Paris is very important; for this conference, the EU countries have already agreed on their position and directions for action.

During the meeting, the officials also discussed migration issues in Europe and Latin America. Both sides shared the opinion that migration is a global problem, and countries have to jointly address it, without losing sight of refugees' human rights.
