Latvian CultMin will need almost EUR 9 mln for 'pressing matters' in 2016

BC, Riga, 26.05.2015.Print version
Mentioning moving back into and kick-starting normal operations at the fully renovated and revamped National Museum of Art as a "pressing matter" requiring additional money, Latvian Culture Minister Dace Melbarde (VL-TB/LNNK) appeared before the Saeima Education and Culture Committee today, informing that her ministry will need close to EUR 9 million next year "to take care of a number of pressing matters", reports LETA.

The almost EUR 2 million that the Museum of Art will need is due to the fact that the Riga City Council (a major investor in the Museum project) has decided to set a higher rental fee, that the state will have to cover.

Melbarde also mentioned that for the pending "Latvia 100" Independence Day celebration in 2018 – an event promising to be the widest in scope, EUR 3.16 million is necessary next year for "planning the program's content."

Salaries for those working in the arts and the arts education sector will require an additional EUR 2.5 million. Melbarde pointed out that last year, the issue of salaries for professional musicians was finally resolved, "now we must tackle an actor's remuneration."

"Average wage for a professional actor is EUR 600 gross – we can imagine what this is 'net'. This is our most critical group," the minister pointed out.
