Saeima re-elects Kalnmeiers as prosecutor general in Latvia

BC, Riga, 21.05.2015.Print version
Today, Saeima re-elected Latvian Prosecutor General Eriks Kalnmeiers for a second term, reports LETA.

76 Saeima members voted for Kalnmeiers. Ilze Vinkele (Unity) abstained, whereas Artis Rasmanis (Greens/Farmers) and Juris Vilums (Alliance of Regions) did not participate in the vote.

The decision will come into force on July 12, as Kalnmeiers' current term ends on July 11.

Kalnmeiers previously said that the main priority would be to ensure stability at the Prosecutor General's Office. He believes that during the past five years, the Office has been working steadily, the results are good, and there have been no significant criticisms, though the Office, just like any other institution, could have done better in some cases.

"We have followed political neutrality and objectivity, though we could also argue about specific cases, however, the Prosecutor General's Office has successfully met these criteria," said Kalnmeiers.

The second priority, taking into account the country's economic situation and budget forecasts for the coming years, is to prevent the results from deteriorating, as there is a possibility that increasingly more people may retire from the Prosecutor General's Office.
