Lithuania's Interior Minister proposes measures to prevent loss of EUR 2.7 bln

BC, Vilnius, 11.05.2015.Print version
Lithuania's Government has approved the Interior Ministry's suggestions, which would allow saving EUR 2.7 billion from the European Union's (EU) funds, which otherwise would be lost, reports LETA/ELTA.

In order to prevent the loss, new territorial units for statistics in Lithuania should be established. The tasks will include changing the boundaries of Vilnius County by grouping less developed municipalities in the County with nearby Counties (by transferring Sirvintos and Ukmerge District Municipalities to Utena County and Salcininkai District Municipality – to Alytus County).

The purpose of the reform is to change the distribution of territorial units for statistics in accordance with the EU's NUTS system so that Lithuania is ready for a situation when the country exceeds 75% of the EU's GDP average, which would prevent Lithuania from receiving the EU's financial assistance.

"It is likely that the 75% limit will be exceeded when the statistical data from 2014 is announced. If we do not implement a reform, in the financial period from 2021 to 2028 Lithuania will be put in the category of regions in transition, as a result of which the country would receive up to EUR 2.7 billion less from the EU fund than it receives now," says Lithuanian Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis.

The minister claims that the new territorial changes will not have any impact on residents, administrative distribution and local governments.
