The prosecutor's office in Latvia has brought charges against a Maxima Latvija employee in one of the criminal cases on Zolitude disaster.

The person has been charged with job safety violations that resulted in severe consequences, Aiga Eiduka from the prosecutor's office informed LETA. The prosecutor's office is not commenting on the case, but LETA has information that the person in question is Maxima Latvija employee Inna Suvajeva.

The State Police opened the criminal case last summer based on the State Labor Inspectorate's findings about regular job safety violations at the company. The police also encumbered several properties of Maxima. The total amount of compensation claims in this case is EUR 5,745,000.

The Criminal Police's Chief Andrejs Grisins told reporters recently that the person in question was responsible for job safety matters at Maxima Latvija. The police believe her to be guilty of safety violations that resulted in multiple deaths.

Maxima Latvija spokesman Janis Beseris told LETA that the said person was still working at the company, albeit in a different job.

As reported, the prosecutor's office has brought charges against eight persons in a criminal case on the collapse of the Maxima supermarket in Zolitude in 2013. Five persons have been accused of violations of construction rules, which resulted in collapse of the building, and three officials are accused of negligence that led to grave consequences.

Three of the accused in the case are construction engineer Ivars Sergets, construction inspection expert Andris Gulbis, construction supervisor Martins Draudins, who are accused of violations of construction regulations. Another three are current and former employees at the Riga Construction Board, accused of negligence.

The police also asked the prosecutor to keep restraints on properties of five legal entities in place.

LETA also reported, 54 people died and scores were injured when the roof of the Maxima supermarket in Riga's Zolitude neighborhood caved in on November 21, 2013.
