MEP Vaidere would be ready to stand for Latvian president

European Parliament Member Inese Vaidere (Unity) would be prepared to stand for Latvian president, even though she understands that persons from non-political circles are currently being considered for the post, reports LETA.

Vaidere said that many persons have told her in recent months that she should put her name in as a presidential candidate. She did not reveal the names of those who have told her this, but added that it is a good feeling to have people say they would like to see her as president.

As her advantages, she mentioned her economic degrees, knowledge on regional policy, personal contacts with top foreign officials and knowledge of foreign languages. She expressed confidence that the next president must be strong in domestic matters in addition to foreign policy.

Vaidere did not wish to guess her chances of being nominated, and said that if this happens then she will be able to speak about her chances of being elected.

As reported, ruling coalition parties previously decided that they would try to reach agreement on one joint candidate for president. The current President Andris Berzins announced last Friday that he would not run for a second term.
