Police hand over for prosecution another criminal process related to Maxima supermarket tragedy

The State Police has handed over to the Prosecutor's Office another criminal process related to the Maxima supermarket tragedy, LETA found out from the State Police.

The State Police has requested a Maxima Latvija Ltd. employee to be prosecuted for possible job safety violations.

 

The total amount of compensation claims in this specific case exceeds EUR 5.5 million.

 

This criminal case deals with violations of safety regulations at the collapsed Maxima supermarket. At the moment, there is one suspect in the case – a Maxima Latvija employee, who the police believe is guilty of safety violations that resulted in multiple deaths.

 

As reported, the State Police have begun to hand over materials in another of the criminal cases on the 2013 supermarket collapse in Riga's Zolitude to the prosecutor's office, asking that the prosecutor's office bring charges against eight persons.

 

Investigation in two criminal cases is under way at the moment, of which one deals with the circumstances of the tragic collapse of the building and violations of construction rules and regulations.

 

LETA also reported, 54 people died and scores were injured when the roof of the Maxima supermarket in Riga's Zolitude neighborhood caved in on November 21, 2013.
