Decision on additional macro-financial assistance to Ukraine takes effect

BC, Riga, 16.04.2015.Print version
On April 15th in Brussels, the Latvian Foreign Ministry's Parliamentary State Secretary for EU Affairs, Zanda Kalnina-Lukasevica, signed a decision on behalf of the Council of the European Union on providing additional micro-financial assistance to Ukraine, the Foreign Ministry informed LETA.

The signing was the last step prior to the decision of the Council and the European Parliament taking effect on assistance that will be started in 2015 and continued into the first half of 2016 as planned.

The micro-financial assistance of EUR 1.8 billion is geared toward support for Ukraine's economic stabilization and its structural reform agenda.

The aid will be disbursed over a period of two years in the form of loans, and paid in three tranches, with the maximum term for loan repayment of 15 years.

The loans of EUR 1.8 billion will supplement the micro-financial assistance of EUR 1.61 billion made available in 2010 and 2014. In view of the deteriorating economic situation, Ukraine has requested additional assistance.

The EU Council approved the European Commission's proposal without amendments on March 31, the European Parliament having already done so on March 25.
