Lithuanian Seimas appoints new State Security Department chief

On Thursday, 9 April 2015, the Seimas approved the dismissal of the State Security Department (VSD) director Gediminas Grina after his term of office ended, reports LETA/ELTA.

The proposal was supported by 98 members of the Seimas, with none voting against and 1 abstention.

 

Grina headed the VSD since 12 April 2010. The director of the VSD is appointed for a 5 year term of office and dismissed by the president with the approval of the Seimas.

 

On Thursday the Seimas voted for the appointment of new director of the VSD, Darius Jauniskis. 107 MPs voted for his nomination, 1 MP abstained with none voting against.

 

Jauniskis thanked members of the Seimas for their support and hoped to meet expectations serving for the benefit of Lithuania.

 

The 47-year-old has served in the Lithuanian Armed Forces for 20 years and headed the Special Operations Forces since 2008.
