Parliament approves in principle president's proposal to amend Latvian political party system

BC, Riga, 27.03.2015.Print version
In the first reading on March 26th 2015, Latvian Saeima approved in principle several draft bills stipulating that only parties with at least 500 members will be eligible to run for the Saeima and European Parliament elections, reports LETA.

The amendments stipulate that only parties of 500 members, founded no later than one year before elections, will be eligible to run for representation in Saeima. The current law stipulates that the minimum number of members in a party is 200.

Similar limits are to be also imposed on political alliances, hence, they will be permitted to run for parliamentary elections on the condition that all member parties be founded no later than one year before the elections, having no less than 500 members.

The same rule applies also to European Parliament elections.

These amendments were drawn up following a proposal by Latvian President Andris Berzins to reform the Latvian political party system.

The draft bills were signed by all coalition party representatives – Augusts Brigmanis (Greens/Farmers), Gaidis Berzins (VL-TB/LNNK), Gundars Daudze (Greens/Farmers), Edvards Smiltens (Unity), and Solvita Aboltina (Unity).
