Lithuania expects to be invited to start its OECD accession negotiations this year. Decision on opening talks is likely to be adopted in June, after assessment of Lithuania's homework and implementation of the membership action plan.
According to the President, membership in one of the most influential organisations in the world would be an important international recognition of Lithuania and a new opportunity to better protect its own interests as well as participate in global decision-making.
"It will not only boost Lithuania's international standing, but will also bring substantial benefits to our economy and people. Lithuania will become more attractive for foreign investors, improve its credit ratings and borrowing costs," the President said.
Our country is already an active participant in OECD committees and working groups. Lithuanian representatives cooperate with OECD experts in strengthening competition, promoting economic liberalization and fighting corruption. Lithuania also contributes to the organisation's support project in Ukraine.
