Timchenko officially launches project Meduza in Riga

BC, Riga, 21.10.2014.Print version
Former chief editor of the Russian news site Lenta.ru, Galina Timchenko, officially launched her project Meduza on October 20th. The project is registered in Latvia to avoid Russia's censorship, informs LETA, referring to DOZHD/FORBES.

The new site includes five main topic screens that users can scroll through. The site has no sections or columns.

"We filter only the most important news, and create the best articles on events in Russia and rest of the world. We advocate freedom to spread information. We despise the interests of officials and large businesses, we hate propaganda and phonograms. Instead of offering opinions, we provide facts. We write only what is important," the editorial staff indicates.

Meduza.io is available as an Internet news site, and also as a mobile application.

The portal went live on October 7; as of October 20, the site has become fully-functional.

Timchenko is the chief editor at Meduza. The staff will also partially consist of former employees of Lenta.ru.

The project is funded by a "consortium of investors" that Meduza declines to reveal. According to Timchenko, these investors are not connected to the media or politics.

Timchenko had also turned to CEO of Yukos Mikhail Khodorkovsky to discuss funding, however, they were unable to come to an agreement.

Timchenko told Forbes that the decision to base Meduza in Latvia was made due to the reason that "it is possible to establish an independent publishing house in Latvia, while in Russia it is impossible."
