Estonia registers second fastest retail sales growth in EU in August

In August 2014, compared with August 2013, Latvia's retail sales increased by 3.9%, which is the sixth fastest growth among all European Union (EU) member states that have provided information, according to latest data collected by Eurostat. Estonia’s and Lithuania’s results are even better, writes LETA.

The highest increase in retail sales in August, was registered in Luxembourg – 12.5%, Estonia – 6.7%, Great Britain – 5.6%, Lithuania and Romania – 4.7% each, as well as Bulgaria – 4.5%.

 

An increase in retail trade turnover in August was registered in all countries from which information was available.

 

In comparison with August 2013, retail sales turnover in all EU countries grew 2.5% in August 2014, while the eurozone registered a 1.9% increase.

 

Meanwhile, when compared to the previous month, retail sales turnover in the eurozone grew by 1.2% in August, and in the EU increased by 1.4%.

 

The fastest month-on-month increase of retail sales turnover was registered in Germany and Luxembourg – 2.5% each, Portugal and Sweden – 2.3% each, as well as Poland – 2.2%.

 

Meanwhile, the largest retail sales decline was registered in Romania and Slovakia – by 0.6% each.

 

Lithuania and Estonia each saw a 0.1% increase in retail trade turnover in August, while Latvia saw a 0.2% reduction.
