In January-August, cargo turnover in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports increased by 3.9%

UST LUGA is a priority project of Russian ports capacity in the Baltic Sea Region. Here, the turnover during the period from January to August 2014 amounted to 49,434.1 thousand tons, while the growth made as much as 23.2% or 9,299.6 thousand tons comparing with the period from January to August 2013.

 

Oil products, crude oil and coal make as much as 90.4% of the port’s cargo. Oil products and coal turnover has increased rapidly – 16,854.7 thousand tons of oil product were transferred (a change of +70.1% or +6,948.0 thousand tons) and 12,506.7 thousand tons of coal were transferred (+5.3% or +625.4 thousand tons). Crude oil turnover was on the level similar to the period from January to August 2013 – 15,340.6 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +2.2% or +330.2 thousand tons). Other cargo that conditioned the total growth of the port’s turnover: ro-ro transfer - 1,068.1 thousand tons (a change of +10.9% or +105.0 thousand tons), new cargo – 762.1 thousand tons of LNG, 1,825.6 thousand tons of other unspecified cargos (a change of +39.7% or +519.2 thousand tons).

 

ST. PETERSBURG PORT. During the period from January to August 2014, 40,968.1 thousand tons of cargo were transferred, i.e. 8.3% or 3,142.9 thousand tons more than during the same period in 2013. Containerized cargos make as much as 38.8% of total turnover, 15,911.5 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +2.7% or +416.1 thousand tons). During the period from January to August 2014 oil product turnover making 23.3% of total port’s turnover was increasing – 9,565.4 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +8.3% or +736.4 thousand tons).

 

Other cargos conditioning total port’s turnover have also increased: bulk cargo group – fertilizers (5,002.3 thousand tons were transferred, a change of +35.4% or +1,308.2 thousand tons), and general cargo group – metals (3,915.5 thousand tons, a change of +2.3% or +86.9 thousand tons) and scrap metal (1,631.7 thousand tons, a change of +110.1% or +855.0 thousand tons).

 

PORT OF PRIMORSK is the Russian centre of crude oil and oil products export. During the period from January to August 2014 37,292.8 thousand tons of products were transferred, i.e. 12.4% or 5,296.5 thousand tons less than during the same period last year. 29,758.8 thousand tons of crude oil (a change of 18.2% or 6,636.9 thousand tons less than during the same period in 2013) and 7,534.0 thousand tons of oil products (a change of +21.6% or +1,340.4 thousand tons) were transferred during the period reviewed.

 

PORT OF VYSOCK. 12,059.3 thousand tons of cargo were transferred, a change of +9.9% or +1,085.9 thousand tons. Here, only two types of cargo are being transferred – oil products and coal. The major part of the port’s turnover (71%) makes oil products, which during the period from January to August 2014 were transferred in the amount of 8,504.4 thousand tons, (a change of +8.8% or +687.7 thousand tons). Turnover of coal during the period from January to August 2014 has increased by 12.6% or 398.2 thousand tons – 3,554.9 thousand tons were transferred.

 

KALININGRAD PORT. Total of 8,984.2 thousand tons of cargo were transferred, which is 3.4% or 319.9 thousand tons less than during the period from January to August 2013. The best results in the port are grain (19.4% of turnover) and oil products (15.9% of the port’s turnover) transfer – 1,746.5 thousand tons (a change of +346.4% or +1,355.3 thousand tons) and 1,426.3 thousand tons (-46.4% or -1,236.6 thousand tons) were transferred correspondingly.

 

During the period from January to August the volume of mass consumer goods in Kaliningrad port has increased: 1,062.1 thousand tons of ro-ro cargos (a change of +50.0% or +353.9 thousand tons) and 893.0 thousand tons of containerized cargos (+5.7% or +47.8 thousand tons) were transferred. Turnover of containerized cargo in units has increased as much as 12.2% – 239,278 TEU were transferred (a change of +25,927 TEU).

 

Turnover of metals that has markedly increased at the end of 2013 has dropped by as much as 31.4% or 330.6 thousand tons during the period from January to August 2014 making 723.4 thousand tons.


During the period from January to August 2014 Klaipėda Port cargo turnover has increased by 4.0% – 23.3 million tons were transferred, i.e. 895.1 thousand tons more than during the period from January to August 2013.


In August Klaipėda Port’s cargo turnover results are as follows – total of 2,697.7 thousand tons were transferred (11.2% increase or 271.7 thousand tons more than in August 2013). Such results were mostly influenced by an increase in fertilizers (921.5 thousand tons transferred, a change of +70.7% or +381.6 thousand tons) and containerized cargos (444.7 thousand tons transferred, a change of +26.2% or +92.4 thousand tons) and a growth in the turnover of oil products 480.7 thousand tons (a change of +2.0% or +9.4 thousand tons). The result of containerized cargo turnover – 444.7 thousand tons (best results for all Augusts since 2010).

 

January to August 2014. The growth of Klaipėda Port cargo turnover results was conditioned by the turnover results of the best cargo in the port - fertilizer (bulk, wet and packed cargo) total of 8,104.2 thousand tons (36.5% were transferred, or 2,165.5 thousand tons more comparing with the period from January to August 2013). Also, the turnover of containerized cargo and ore with corresponding turnover of 3,655.2 thousand tons (a change of +21.9% or +655.5 thousand tons) and 852.3 thousand tons (a change of +66.1% or +339.1 thousand tons).

 

Amount of bulk/loose cargo making 46% of Klaipėda Port cargo turnover during the period from January to August 2014 was increasing rapidly – 10.702.2 thousand tons were transferred, i.e. 22.2% or 1,945.2 thousand tons more than during the period from January to August 2013. Such increase was mostly influenced by the transfer of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers that increased by as much as 48.0% – 6,911.1 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +2,242.0 thousand tons). Ore transfer during the period from January to August 2014 was increasing rapidly – 852.3 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +66.1% or +339.1 thousand tons). Other cargos conditioning the transfer of this group were decreasing: 1,328.9 thousand tons of agricultural products were transferred (a change of -14.3% or -222.4 thousand tons) and 901.8 thousand tons of primary and processed mineral deposits and construction materials were transferred (a change of -35.5% or -495.6 thousand tons).

 

Wet cargo transfer making 21% of the port’s turnover during the period from January to August 2014, comparing with the same period last year, has notably decreased – total volume of wet cargo amounted to 5,001.1 thousand tons (a change of -23.9% or -1,572.8 thousand tons). Wet cargo turnover was mostly influenced by a decrease in oil products and wet fertilizers transfer 3,873.1 thousand tons of oil products were transferred (a change of -27.1% or -1,436.5 thousand tons), 852.6 thousand tons of wet fertilizers were transferred (a change of -12.7% or -123.8 thousand tons).

 

General cargo making 33% of Klaipėda Port turnover during the period from January to August 2014 has increased by 7.4% or 522.7 thousand tons 7,565.2 thousand tons were transferred. Containerized cargos belonging to this group have increased as much as by 21.9%, total of 3,655.2 thousand tons were transferred (655.5 thousand tons more than during the period from January to August 2013). Considering the cargos of the mentioned group that condition total port’s turnover, transportation of ro-ro cargos has decreased (total of 2,947.6 thousand tons were transferred, a change of -4.5% or -137.4 thousand tons), wood and forestry products (286.7 thousand tons were transferred, a change of -12.4% or -40.5 thousand tons).

 

During the period from January to August 2014 4,372 ships have entered Klaipėda Port and Būtingė Oil Terminal, including 45 ships that moored in Būtingė Oil Terminal and 4,327 in Klaipėda Port (1.6% or 70 ships less comparing with the period from January to August 2013). 


During the period reviewed 266,199 of passengers have visited, i.e. 27.7% or 57,821 passengers more than during the period from January to August 2013.

 

Passenger transportation. During the period from January to August 2014, 53 cruisers have moored in Klaipėda Port, i.e. 43.2% or 16 cruisers more than during the period from January to August 2013. The number has increased due to the passengers of the cruisers 53,500 passengers have arrived (85.8% or 24,699 passengers more).

 

PORT OF TALLINN. During the period from January to August 2014, 19,433.4 thousand tons were transferred, a change of +0.3% or +65.4 thousand tons. Turnover of the best cargo of the Port of Tallinn – oil products accounting for as much as 69% of total turnover – during the period from January to August 2014 has remained similar to the last year’s period – 13,339.8 thousand tons were transferred (a change of -0.7% or -89.7 thousand tons).

 

Containerized cargos in the group of general cargos have increased notably: 1,329.7 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +16.3% or +186.6 thousand tons) and 2,637.0 thousand tons of ro-ro cargos accounting for 13.6% of total port’s turnover (a change of +9.3% or +223.6 thousand tons). Turnover of containerized cargo in units has also increased – 176,678 TEU were transferred (a change of +4.7% or +7 859 TEU).

 

Turnover of fertilizers belonging to bulk/loose cargo group has decreased – 1,082.2 thousand tons were transferred (a change of -9.2% or -109.9 thousand tons).

 

Passenger transportation. During the period from January to August 2014, the united port of Tallinn has serviced 6,758.0 thousand passengers, i.e. 5.5% or 351.3 thousand passengers more than during the same period of 2013.

 

Ships. 4,691 ships have entered the Port of Tallinn, i.e. 15 ships or 0.3% less comparing with the period from January to August 2013.

 

PORT OF RIGA. During the period from January to August 2014, a rapid growth of cargoes (as much as 14.2%) was noted – total of 26,664.2 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +3,313.8 thousand tons). Such growth was mostly influenced by oil products turnover which has rapidly increased by as much as 34.1% – 6,708.6 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +1,704.1 thousand tons). Such growth was conditioned by investment in new oil products storages, other objects of infrastructure, port dredging (the port is servicing tankers of up to 14.7 m draught), which allowed oil companies attracting new customers to the Port of Riga.

 

The best port’s cargo – coal 36.9% of total turnover – has been increasing as well. 9,829.8 thousand tons of coal were transferred (a change of +8.0% or +727.2 thousand tons).

 

Fertilizers in the group of bulk/loose cargos is increasing rapidly 1,596.6 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +52.0% or +546.1 thousand tons). This was conditioned by the new Riga fertilizer terminal that has actively started its operation. 

 

Containerized cargos in the group of general cargos have increased, 2,658.1 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +4.7% or +119.7 thousand tons). Turnover of wood and forestry products accounting for 7.5% of total turnover is dropping consistently – 2,006.4 thousand tons were transferred (a change of -9.1% or -201.6 thousand tons).

 

Passenger transportation. During the period from January to August 2014, Riga Port was visited by 579.3 thousand passengers (a change of -3.7% or -22.3 thousand passengers), including 57,043 passengers of cruisers.

 

PORT OF VENTSPILS. During the period from January to August 2014, 18,952.0 thousand tons of cargos were transferred, the change has made -8.5% or -1,769.0 thousand tons. Oil products are transferred in the port the best (56.7% of total turnover) and coal (24.4%). During the period from January to August this year oil products turnover, comparing with 2013, has dropped – 10,747.0 thousand tons were transferred (a change of -8.0% or -935.0 thousand tons). Coal turnover has dropped notable – 4,626.0 thousand tons were transferred (a change of -12.7% or -674.0 thousand tons).

 

Among other cargos conditioning total turnover of the port’s cargos, volume of fertilizers has been growing rapidly – 1,296.0 thousand tons were transferred (a change of +51.8% or +442.0 thousand tons).

 

Passenger transportation. During the period from January to August 2014, the Port of Ventspils was visited by 57,141 thousand passengers, i.e. 31.4% or 13,644 passengers more than during the period from January to August 2013.

 

Ships. Total of 1,206 ships have entered, a change of -13.6% or -164 ships.

 

PORT OF LIEPAJA. During the period from January to August 2014, 3,323.1 thousand tons of cargos were transferred (a change of +6.2% or +194.7 thousand tons). The major part of this port’s turnover (47%) is grain, which turnover during the period from January to August 2014 has increased markedly – 1,564.4 thousand tons were transferred, the change made +50.9% or +527.8 thousand tons.

 

Turnover of wet cargoes during the period from January to August 2014 has remained similar – 276.2 thousand tons of oil products, crude oil and wet chemical cargos were transferred (a change of -3.8% or -11.0 thousand tons).

 

There was a marked drop in the turnover of general cargos – 877.8 thousand tons were transferred (a change of -28.0% or -340.6 thousand tons). This was mostly conditioned by a decrease in metal turnover amounting to as much as 92% or 241 thousand tons.

 

Passenger transportation. Number of passengers in Port of Liepaja amounted to 29,289, i.e. 1.0% or 359 passenger less.

 

Ships. During the period from January to August 2014, 920 ships have moored in the Port of Liepaja, i.e. 3.0% or 29 ships more than during the same period last year.
