"We are proud to present the new tarmac facility, which is a huge step toward improving the company's competitiveness and further development. We chose to build the new facility in Rezekne because it is the second largest area where Latvijas Valsts celi road construction and maintenance company is planning to reconstruct national and municipal highways with the European Union's co-funding. There is massive road reconstruction going on in the neighboring regions, and the demand for tarmac is expected to rise steeply in the future here," stressed Gurcus.

The construction of the new facility began five months ago in a neglected industrial area, which has now been tidied up for the good of the public. The new facility also has own laboratory to perform quality tests on tarmac the facility makes.

German Ambassador to Latvia Andrea Wiktorin also said she was pleased at Matthai's decision to expand operations in Latgale where many projects are under way, including infrastructure development projects. Matthai is one of the most successful road construction companies in Germany, and the company's decision to do business here is in Latvia's interest, too, said the ambassador.

The new tarmac facility in Rezekne has a staff of seven: four workers at the facility and three at the laboratory.

EUR 1,900,000 has been invested in the new facility so far. The company hopes to return the investment in a period of five years.

Matthai Latvija is the Latvian subsidiary of Matthai Bauunternehmen GmbH&Co.KG, which has been operating in Latvia since 2013. The German group has invested a total of EUR 7.5 million so far and employs around 130 people its two companies in Latvia – road construction company Matthail Latvija and the waterways development and sewerage construction company Matthai.
