Liepaja Port's cargo turnover rises by 6.2% in 8 months
Liepaja SEZ Investment and Marketing Department's head Ivo Kolins said that Liepaja Port's cargo turnover was strongly affected by a major decrease in the operations of Liepajas osta LM, formerly the largest stevedoring company at the port, due to the insolvency and ensuing problems at its parent company, Liepajas metalurgs. In the meantime, Liepaja Bulk Terminal has been able to triple its turnover from August 2013, thereby compensating for reduction in other companies' turnover.
In August, Liepaja Port's cargo turnover totaled 345,900 tons, which is 14.7% more than in July, albeit 1.6% less than in August 2013. The majority of the port's cargo turnover is still made up of bulk cargo (60.3%), followed by general cargo (31.2%) and liquid cargo (8.5%).
102 ships called on the port in August, whereas the port's passenger turnover stood at 6,757 passengers. In January-August, the port has served 920 ships and 29,289 passengers.
