Cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports in January-December grew to 355 479,9 thou. tn

In January-December 2013, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 355 479,9 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is +0,35% or +1 227,4 thou. tn, reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

63 821,9 thou. tn of oil and oil products, i.e. less by -14,6% or by -10 946,8 thou. tn than in January – December of 2012 were handled in PRIMORSK PORT. Primorsk Port handles exclusively oil and oil products. Throughout the analysed period 54 521,5 thou. tn of crude oil and  9 300,4thou. tn of oil products  were handled in the Port.

 

In the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG totally 57 972,1 thou. tn of cargo were handled; i.e., more by  +0,3% or by +157,7  thou. tn than during 2012. Within the period of January-December of 2013 the Port experienced the highest growth in the handling volumes of containerised cargoes constituting 40% of the overall turnover of the Port (23 179 thou. tn, the change was +0,6% or +139,4 thou. tn yoy) and oil products constituting 24% of the overall turnover of the Port  (13 974,8 thou. tn, the change was -0,1% or -15,2 thou tn yoy). 

 

The throughput of other cargo types making the most significant impact on the cargo handling rate of the Seaport of Saint Petersburg marked the increase: fertilizers (the yoy change was +26,7% or +1 269,5 thou. tn to 6 022,7 thou. tn),   reefer cargo (2 203,4 thou. tn were handled, the change was +5% or +104,6 thou. tn yoy) and Ro-Ro cargoes (+75,5% or +577,5 thou. tn yoy, to 1 342,2 thou. tn).

 

The drop of general cargo handling turnover (-8%) was the most significant: non - ferrous metal (5 600,6 thou. tn were handled, the change was -12,9% or -826 thou. tn yoy) and scrap metal

(1 413,3 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -5,2% or -78,3 thou. tn yoy).

 

UST-LUGA PORT totally handled 62 640,4 thou. tn of cargo, the year-on-year change was +33,9% or +15 854,4 thou. tn. Such a rapid growth was mainly determined by the increased handling turnover of crude oil and oil products constituting 63% of the overall cargo handling (39 671,2 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +47,5% or +12 773,7 thou. tn) and coal constituting 29% of the overall cargo handling (17 965,5 thou. tn were handled, the change was +14,3% or +2 249,7 thou. tn). Volumes of consumer commodities also significantly increased the cargo handling rates of Ust-Luga Port at the end of the year: Ro-Ro cargoes (1 411,7 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +27,5% or +304,6 thou. tn) and  containerised cargoes (421,8 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +318% or +320,9 thou. tn).

 

In the overall turnover of the Port only the handling rates of metal marked the decrease (337,5 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -72% or -868,3 thou. tn).

 

The overall turnover in the PORT of VYSOTSK within the analysed period was 16 157,1 thou. tn, the year-on-year change was +18,5% or +2 522,9 thou. tn. This port handles basically two types of cargo. Oil products cut out the biggest share in the overall turnover of the Port (70%). Throughout the analysed period 11 252,1 thou. tn of oil products were handled, i.e. the handling rates increased by +8,8% year-on-year. The throughput of coal handling achieved a significant rise and reached 4 905 thou. tn, the change was +48,8% or +1 609,3 thou. tn year-on-year.

 

The total throughput in the PORT OF KALININGRAD reached 13 672,4 thou. tn, the change was more by +7,5% or by + 952,9 thou. tn than in 2012. Oil products   (3 326,7 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -22,2% or -947,6 thou. tn), within the analysed period significantly increased turnover of metal handling  (1 446,7 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +32,7% or +356,7 thou tn) and grain handling (1 228,4 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +33,5% or +308 thou. tn) cut out and the biggest share in the overall cargo handling turnover of this Port (24,3%).

The throughput of other types of cargo making impact on Port handling rates dropped down:  containerised cargoes (1 297,6 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -12,8% or -190,3 thou. tn),  Ro-Ro cargoes (1 008,4 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -4,6% or -49,1 thou. tn)  and crude oil ( 953 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -7,8% or -80,4 thou. tn).


The total throughput of Klaipeda Port and in Butingės terminal within the period of January-December of 2013 totalled 43,39 mln. tn of seaborne cargo – it was the third place in the history of the best cargo handling records, with records reached in the handling of containers, agriculture products, iron ore and minerals and construction materials.

 

Last year the cargo handling turnover in Klaipeda Port reached 33,42 mln. tn, the year-on-year change was  -5,2% or -1 824,4 thou. tn, meanwhile 8,97 mln. tn of cargo were handled at Butingės terminal, the year-on-year change being +5,3% or +447,9 thou. tn.

 

Last year the best result in Klaipeda Port was achieved in the turnover of dry and bulk cargo (42%): totally 14 034,2 thou. tn, i.e. less by 0,2% than in 2012, were handled. The record throughput  of agriculture products (3 153,1 thou. tn, +14,8% or +406,1 thou. tn yoy), ore (1 004,8 thou. tn were handling, the yoy change was +28% or +220,1 thou. tn) and raw and processed minerals and construction materials  ( 2 124,9 thou. tn, +18,9% or +337,9 thou. tn yoy) made the most significant impact on the achievement of such result.

 

Regardless of the decreased rate recorded in the handling turnover of natural and chemical fertilizers (-10,3% or -788,7 thou. tn yoy), the handling volumes of this cargo type were the  highest – 6 895,2 thou. tn.  thou. tn.

 

In 2013 the highest handling rates in the group of liquid cargo were recorded in the handling turnover of  crude oil: 8 967,2 thou. tn were handled, the year-on-year change was +5,3% or +447,9 thou. tn. Notwithstanding the fact that within the period of twelve months the handling rates of oil and oil products contracted by -14,4% or by -1191,9 thou. tn to 7 067,4 thou. tn comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year,  the overall throughput of oil and oil products constitute 21% of all cargoes handled in the Port.  The aggregate turnover of liquid cargo in Klaipeda Port and at Butinges Terminal within the analysed period was 17 743,4 thou. tn, the year-on-year change was -5,4% or -1 002,9 thou. tn.

 

Last year in the group of general cargo with the throughput of 10 607,8 thou. tn the record in containerised cargo handling was achieved: 4 563,9 thou. tn (+4,6% yoy) or 402 535 in terms of TEU were handled (+5,6% yoy). The handling rates of other cargo types, that made impact on the cargo turnover of the aforementioned cargo group, decreased: Ro-Ro cargoes ( 4 604,7 thou. tn, -4,9% or -237,3 thou. tn yoy), packed natural and chemical fertilizers (409,7 thou. tn, -21,5% or -112 thou. tn yoy) and  timber and forest products (487,2 thou. tn, -11,3% or -62,2 thou. tn yoy).

 

Altogether 7 009 vessels were reported to call Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – December of 2013. 90 vessels (+5,9% or more by 5 vessels yoy) moored at Būtingės terminal. Klaipėda Seaport received 6 919 vessels (less by -5,6% or by 410 vessels comparing with the corresponding period of 2012 ).

 

The number of passengers within the analysed period was 345 312 passengers, i.e. more by 5 245 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.

 

The total throughput in the JOINT PORT of TALLINN in 2013 was 28 247 thou. tn, the change was -4,2% or -1 229,1 thou. tn year-on-year. The handling rates of oil products constituting the basic share in the overall cargo handling turnover in this Port -67%- remained the same comparing with 2012: totally 18 957,8 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +0,04% or +8,1 thou. tn.

 

The handling rates of other types of cargo making significant impact on the overall turnover of Tallinn Port contracted: Ro-Ro cargoes constituting 13% in the overall cargo handling turnover of the Port  (3 684 thou. tn, the yoy change was -3,8% or -144,1 thou. tn), fertilizers (1 730,9 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -25,1% or -578,8 thou. tn) and construction materials and minerals  (627,8  thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -22% or -177,4 thou. tn). In terms of general cargo the turnover of containerised cargoes (1 775,2 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +8,1% or +133,5 thou. tn), timber and forest products (440,1 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +52,6% or +151,7 thou. tn) marked the significant increase and in the group of  dry and  bulk cargo it is worth to note the increasing handling rates of grain that within the period of 2013 increased by +56,5% or by +95,5 thou. tn yoy to 264,7 thou. tn.

 

Passenger traffic. This year the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 9 236,4 thou. passengers, the change was +4,5% year-on-year, or +396,9 thou. passengers.

 

Vessels. 6 865 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. less by -373 vessels or by -5,2% comparing with the corresponding period of 2012.

 

The aggregate throughput of RIGA PORT totalled 35 466,7 thou. tn, the change was -1,6% year-on - year or -585,2 thou. tn. The handling rates of main cargo types making the greatest impact on the overall cargo handling rates of the Port saw the consistent decrease: 14 041,8 thou tons of coal, cutting out 40% in the overall turnover of the Port, were handled ( the yoy change was -5,8% or -858,3 thou. tn), 7 030,2 thou. tn of oil products, cutting out 20% in the overall turnover of the Port, were handled (the change was -8,4% or -646,1 thou. tn yoy ), 3 291,1 thou. tn of  timber and forest products were handled ( the change was -9,5% or -345 thou. tn yoy) and 1 411,5 thou. tn of fertilizers were handled (the change was -0,3% or -3,7 thou. tn yoy).

 

In the group of bulk and dry cargo the most rapid growth was recorded in the handling of metal

(860 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +65,9% or +341,9 thou. tn) and ore (443,8 thou. tn were handled, the change was +266,2% or +322,6 thou. tn) and in the group of general cargo - the handling turnover of containerised cargoes (3 908,8 thou. tn were handled, the change was +7,6% or +276,7 thou. tn yoy) saw the most rapid growth.

 

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 837 665 passengers (the year-on-year change was +2,8% or +22 639 passengers) including 66 968 passengers of cruise liners.

 

In 2013 the cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS decreased by -5,2% or by -1 580,0 thou. tn. year-on-year to 28 766 thou. tn. Although bulk ore was handled in the Port only till August of 2013 it was the only cargo type representing the significant increase comparing with 2012: 563 thou. tn were handled, i.e. more by +24,8% or by +112 thou. tn.

 

The handling turnover of other cargo types making the greatest impact on the overall cargo throughput in the Port of Ventspils, marked the significant decrease last year comparing with 2012: oil products, constituting 54% of the overall Port cargo handling (15 609,0 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -3% or -486 thou. t),  coal, constituting 26% of the overall Port cargo handling (7 442 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -5,4% or -424 thou. tn), fertilizers (1 566 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -10,5% or -184 thou. tn), Ro-Ro cargoes (1 882 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -0,8% or -16,0 thou. tn) and timber and forest products (577,0 thou. tn were handled; the yoy change was -13,6% or  -91,0 thou. tn).

 

Passenger traffic. Within the period of 12 months of the current year 60 133 passengers (including 923 cruise passengers) called the Port of Ventspils, the change was -0,7% or less by 417 passengers comparing with the correspondent period of 2012.

 

Vessels. In total the Port rendered services to 1 729 vessels; the yoy change was -2,6%, or -47 vessels.

 

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA reached 4 838,2 thou. tn, the year-on-year change was -34,9% or -2 593,2 thou. tn. Grain cargo cuts out the largest share of handling volumes of this port (40%). In 2013 the grain handling turnover dropped down significantly comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year:  1 918,4 thou. tn were handled, the year-on-year change was -34,8% or -1 025,5 thou. tn.

 

The handling rates of liquid cargo that fluctuated up and down within the whole period of 2013 remained negative by the end of December comparing with results of 2012: totally the handling volumes of oil products, crude oil and liquid chemical cargoes were 406 thou. tn, i.e. less by -1% or by 4,2 thou. tn. 

 

The throughput of timber and forest products (678,3 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -30,2% or -293 thou. tn)  and construction materials and minerals  (469,8 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was -13,1% or -70,6 thou. tn) was also decreasing gradually within the analysed period.

 

Within 12 months of the previous year only the handling of Ro-Ro cargoes marked a slight increase (690,7 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was +1,5% or +9,9 thou. tn).

 

Passenger traffic.  The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 42 607 passengers, the year-on-year change was +28,2% or +9 365 passengers.

 

Vessels. In total the Port rendered services to 1 308 vessels, i.e. less by 528 vessels or by -28,8% if to compare with the corresponding period of 2012.
