The Tourism Development Agency's Director Armands Slokenbergs signed the memorandum on behalf of Latvia and Uzbekturizm head Faruk Rizayev on behalf of Uzbekistan.

The goal of the memorandum is to create favorable conditions for tourism development.

The memorandum defines both countries' cooperation objectives and strategies to achieve these objectives, including advertising campaigns in both countries' mass media, organization of introductory visits for travel agencies and media representatives, promotion of medical tourism and others.

According to Slokenbergs, the memorandum will open up new opportunities.

"The representatives from Uzbekistan have invited Latvian tourism experts to participate in international tourism fairs they organize. The Uzbeks have established a fund where businessmen invest money in order to implement, in collaboration with the state, tourism marketing measures – including cross-border cooperation. Taking into consideration that our countries are a long distance apart, we should not expect a steep increase in the number of tourists from Uzbekistan to visit Latvia. But we do have to think about products with high added value, medical and conference tourism offers that could interest Uzbekistan," said Slokenbergs.

The memorandum comes into force today and is valid for a period of five years.
