In January-March, cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports grew by 3.8%

In January-March 2013, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 88 258,9 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is +3,8% or +3 260,9 thou. tn, reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

In PRIMORSK PORT 16 767,0 thou. tn of oil and oil products, i.e. less by -14,9% or by 2 938,8 thou. tn than in January – March of 2012 were handled. Primorsk Port handles exclusively oil and oil products. Throughout the analysed period 14 484,9 thou. tn of crude oil (-19,3% or -3 458,6 thou. tn yoy) and 2 282,1 thou. tn of oil products (+29,5% or +519,8 thou. tn yoy) were handled in the Port.

 

In the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG totally 12 378,5 thou. tn of cargo were handled; the change was -5,6% or less by -729,1 thou. tn than during the corresponding period of 2012. Containerised cargoes constitute 44,7% of the total cargo handling (5 531,5 thou. tn were handled;  yoy change was -3,8% or -219,1 thou. tn). Oil products constitute 18,6% ( 2 303,0 thou. tn were handled;  yoy change was -5,3% or -128,7 thou. tn), metal  constitutes 12,1% (1 494,8 thou. tn were handled; yoy change was -20,1% or -375,0 thou. tn) and fertilizers constitute 8,6% (1 062,9 thou. tn were handled; yoy change was +18,1% or +163,1 thou. tn),  of the total cargo handling volumes.  Reefer cargoes marked the increase by 25,8%  or by 101,4 thou. tn to 493,8 thou. tn that were handled in January - March of 2013.

 

UST-LUGA PORT totally handled 13 254,1 thou. tn of cargo; the year-on-year change was +88,7% or +6 230,1 thou. tn. Such a rapid growth in cargo handling turnover was determined by the increased handling rates of cargoes that cut out the largest share of the overall turnover of this Port: crude oil (5 094,7 thou. tn were handled, no handling operations in the Ist quarter of 2012), oil products ( 3 355,7 thou. tn were handled;  the yoy change was +17,2% or +491,9 thou. tn), the coal handling increased by +7,5% or by +245,7 thou. tn to 3 513,5 thou. tn in January – Marc of 2013.  

 

The overall turnover in the PORT of VYSOTSK within the analysed period was 3 723,1 thou. tn; the year-on-year change was +15,0% or +485,0 thou. tn.  This port handles mainly two categories of cargo. Oil products constitute the largest share in the overall turnover of the Port, i.e., 72,7%  Throughout the analysed period 2 706,3 thou. tn of oil products were handled, i.e. the handling rates increased by +4,0% or by +105,1 thou. tn year-on-year. Volumes of coal handling were 2 706,3 thou. tn; the change was +59,6% or +379,9 thou. tn year-on-year.


The total throughput of Klaipėda Port and in Būtingės terminal in the Ist quarter of 2013 totalled 11,8 mln tn of seaborne cargo, the change of cargo handling turnover was +13,9% if to compare with the corresponding period of 2012.  The cargo handling turnover in Klaipėda Port within the analysed period reached 9,4 mln tn, the year-on-year change was  +13,9% or +1,2 mln tn, meanwhile 2,4 mln tn of cargo were handled at Butingės terminal, the year-on-year change being +14,0% or +0,3 mln tn. 

 

Comparing with the corresponding period of 2012 the most significant growth of cargo handling volumes in January – March of 2013 was reached due to increased handling rates of dry and bulk cargoes (the growth reached 32,4% comparing with the corresponding period of 2012) including  agriculture products (+742,4 thou. tn yoy), natural and chemical fertilizers (+221,4 thou. tn yoy), raw sugar (bulk) (+125,1 thou. tn yoy), and raw and processed minerals and construction materials (+50,5 thou. tn yoy).

 

In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of liquid cargo marked the total increase in Klaipeda Seaport and at Butingės Terminal by 13,9% yoy to 5 552,0 thou. tn. The significant growth of handling rates of cargoes belonging to this cargo group has been recorded: crude oil (+14,0% or +294,4 thou. tn yoy), oil products (+14,0% or +294,4 thou. tn yoy), natural and chemical fertilizers (liquid) (+28,2 % or +102,4 thou. tn yoy) and raw sugar (molasses) (+34,3% or +10,2 thou. tn yoy).

 

 The drop of general cargo handling volumes by 5,4% in Klaipeda Seaport has started from the very  beginning of the year. Only 2 535,0 thou. tn were handled in January – March of 2013 ( 21,5% of overall Port handling turnover). The growth of Ro-Ro cargo turnover has remained constant and has increased approx. by 1%  calculating in both units (59 842 units were handled) and in terms of tonnage (1 138,5  thou. tn were handled, the change was +0,1 pct or +0,9 thou. tn yoy). The handling volumes of frozen products increased as well (70,6 thou. tn were handled, the yoy change was 9,6% or  +6,2 thou. tn). The significant decrease of handling turnover was recorded in the cargo handling rates of the remaining cargo types attributed to this group of cargoes: -36,7% of natural and chemical fertilizers (packed),  -12,0% of timber and forest products, -17,4% of iron and steel products, -10,2% of metal constructions, -4,7% of containerised cargo (in terms of tonnage) if to compare with the corresponding period of 2012. The handling turnover of containerised cargoes in terms of TEU increased during the Ist quarter of 2013 and reached 95 366 TEU (+4,7% or +4 270 TEU yoy).

 

1 612 vessels were reported to call Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – March of 2013. 24 vessels (+14,3% or more by 3 vessels yoy) moored at Būtingės terminal. Klaipėda Seaport received 1 588 vessels (less by 1,4% yoy) including:

 

- 1 107 international vessels (less by 83 vessels or by 7,0 pct year-on-year)

-  481 domestic ships ( more by 60  ships or by 14,3% yoy). 

 

The number of passengers within the analysed period was 53 706, i.e. less by 6,2% or by 3 527 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of the previous year.

 

The total throughput in the PORT of TALLINN in January – March of the current year was 7 719,2 thou. tn; the change was -7,5% or -629,0 thou. tn year-on-year. Oil products (5 662,8 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was +1,2% or +64,4 thou. tn),  Ro-Ro cargoes (848,7 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was -10,5% or -99,1 thou. tn), containerized cargoes (432,7 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was +1,5% or +6,6 thou. tn) and fertilizers (381,6 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was -28,1% or -149,0 thou. tn) constitute the basic share of overall cargo flow in the Port of Tallinn.

 

Passenger traffic. This year the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 1 731,6 thou. passengers; the change was +4,6% year-on-year, or +75,7 thou. passengers.

 

Vessels. 1676 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. less by 19 vessels or by 1,1% comparing with the corresponding period of 2012. The Port rendered services to 511 cargo ships ( the yoy change was -5,5% or less by 30 ships)  and to 1 165 passenger ships; the yoy change was +1,0% or more by 11 ships.

 

The aggregate throughput of RIGA PORT totalled 8 149,8 thou. tn; the change was -14,1% year– on - year or -1 337,2 thou. tn. In January-March of 2013 coal and oil products constituted the largest share in the overall handling volumes in this Port (38,1% and 25,4% respectively).

 

The reduced flow of these cargo categories made the greatest impact on the cargo  handling turnover in the Port of Riga:  oil products ( decreased by -14,4% or by -349,6 thou. tn yoy to 2 070,4 thou. tn), coal (decreased by -19,5% or by -749,9 thou. tn yoy to 3 104,0 thou. tn).

 

In January – March of 2013 the handling rates of fertilizers (+17,4% or +56,3 thou. tn yoy to 380,1 thou. tn), containers (+5,7% or +52,0 thou. tn yoy to 962,3 thou. tn) marked the increase.

 

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 157 357 passengers; the year-on-year change was +6,9% or +10 141 passenger. The number of cruise passengers was 5 054; the yoy change was +51,2% or +1 712 passengers.

 

The cargo handling turnover in the SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS increased by +7,0% or by +596,0 thou. tn. year-on-year which altogether totalled 9 122,0 thou. tn. The dominating cargo categories in the Seaport of Ventspils were as follows:  oil products that amounted to 4 937,0 thou. tn in January – March of 2013 the year-on-year change being +5,0% or +233,0 thou. tn. and coal that amounted to 2 470,0 thou. tn with year –on year change +2,1% or +51,0 thou. tn.

 

In January- March of 2013 the handling rates of fertilizers dropped rather significantly (319,0 thou. tn were handled; the yoy change was -67,0 thou. tn or -17,4%).

 

Passenger traffic. 11 079 was the number of passengers calling the Port of Ventspils in January-March of 2013; the year-on-year change was -2 passengers.

 

Vessels. In total the Port rendered services to 469 vessels; the year-on-year change was +2,0 pct, or +9 vessels

           

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA reached 1 351,5 thou. tn; the year-on-year change was -20,7% or -353,4 thou. tn. Grain handling cut out the largest share of handling volumes of this port. In January – March of 2013 the Port handled 424,5 thou. tn of grain; the year-on-year change was  -38,4% or -264,4 thou. tn. The handling of scrap metal also marked a considerable slow down – 51,8 thou. tn were handled; the change was -70,5 thou. tn or -123,8% The highest increase of handling turnover was recorded in  metal handling volumes  (210,7 thou. tn were handled; the year-on-year change was +60,2 thou. tn or +40,0%). 

 

Passenger traffic.  The number of passengers calling the Port of Liepaja was 5 329; the year-on-year change was +50,6%  or +1 790 passengers.

 

Vessels. In total the Port rendered services to 359 vessels, i.e. less by 78 vessels or by 17,8%  if to compare with the corresponding period of the previous year.
