Cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports increased by 5.6% in January-December

Throughout the January-December 2012 period, the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Coast Seaports totalled 353 303,4 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is +5,6% or +18 653,7 thou. tn. Basic cargo categories that were crucial to this growth were as follows: crude oil (+11 340,1 thou. tn yoy), coal (+4 456,0 thou. tn yoy) and containerised cargoes (+2 100,6 thou. tn yoy), reports BC Klaipeda port’s press service.

In PRIMORSK PORT 75 070,5 thou. tn of oil and oil products, i.e. less by -0,2% or by 128,6 thou. tn than in January – December of 2011 were handled. Primorsk Port handles exclusively oil and oil products. Throughout the analysed period 68 538,2 thou. tn of crude oil and 6 532,4 thou. tn of oil products were handled in the Port.

 

In the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG 56 997,5 thou. tn of cargo were handled totally; the change makes -4,6% or less by -2 729,4 thou. tn than during the corresponding period of 2011.

 

Volumes of general cargo achieved 37 967,2 thou. tn; the change year-on-year is +3,4% or +1 247,5 thou. tn, including:

UST-LUGA PORT handled 46 674,8 thou. tn of cargo; the year-on-year change is +107,2% or  +24 152,7 thou. tn. Coal, crude oil and oil products constitute the largest part of the overall turnover of this Port (33,7%, 30,2% and 27,0% respectively). 

           

Handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo totalled 16 890,0 thou. tn; the yoy change is +24,2% or +3 294,2 thou. tn, including

The overall cargo handling turnover in the PORT of VYSOTSK within the analysed period was 13 633,9 thou. tn; the change makes +1,6% year-on-year or +211,9 thou. tn.  This port handles only two categories of cargo. Oil products constitute the largest share in the overall turnover of the Port, i.e., 75,8% 10 329,9 thou. tn of oil products were handled throughout the analysed period, i.e. the handling rates increased by +1,1% or by +109,7 thou. tn year-on-year. Volumes of coal handling were 3 295,4 thou. tn; the change is +2,9% or +93,6 thou. tn year-on-year.

 

The aggregate throughput of seaborne cargo in Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – December of 2012 totalled 43,76 million tn, the overall year – on - year change was 3,9% down. 35,24 million tons were handled in Klaipėda Seaport throughout the analysed period, the year-on-year change was -3,7% or -1,35 million tn, meanwhile Būtingės terminal handled 8,52 million tn, the year-on-year change was -4,6% or -0,4  million tn.

 

Within the period of January – December of 2012 the handling volumes of agriculture products (+1 147,7 thou. tn yoy), raw and processed minerals and construction materials (+227,5 thou. tn yoy), iron ore (+157,4 thou. tn yoy) and), containerised cargoes (+92,5 thou. tn yoy) and peat (+88,5 thou. tn yoy) marked an increase comparing with the corresponding period of 2011

 

The most significant drop down in cargo turnover throughout January – December of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 occurred due to decreased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (-1 880,8 thou. tn yoy), oil products (-879,2 thou. tn yoy) and crude oil (-413,4 thou. tn yoy).

 

In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of liquid cargo decreased by 6,1% yoy to 18 746,3 thou. tn (42,8% of overall Port handling turnover).  General cargo handling volumes decreased by 0,7% yoy, the overall turnover in this cargo group was 10 951,8 thou. tn (25,0% of overall Port handling turnover). Dry and bulk cargo handling volumes decreased by 3,2% yoy, the handling rates of this cargo category were 14 603,8 thou. tn (32,2% of overall Port handling turnover).

 

7 414 vessels were reported to call Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal throughout the period of January – December of 2012. 85 vessels (-5,6% or less by 5 vessels yoy) moored at Būtingės terminal. 4 953 international vessels (more by 114 vessels or +2,4% year-on-year) and 2 376 domestic ships ( more by 152  ships or 6,8% yoy) were reported to call Klaipėda Port. Throughout the foregoing period of the current year 7 329 vessels were reported to call the Seaport of Klaipėda, hence the number of vessels calling Klaipėda Port increased by 266 vessels or by +3,8% comparing with the corresponding period of 2011.

 

The number of passengers calling the Port throughout the analysed period was 340 067, i.e. more by 5,0% or by 16 243 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2011. The number of cruise line passengers was 26 769, i.e. more by +24,6% or +5 291 passenger comparing with the corresponding period of the last year.

 

The total throughput in TALLINN PORT was 29 476,1 thou. tn; the change is -19,2% or -6 991,0 thou. tn year-on-year.

Passenger traffic. This year the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 8 841,7 thou. passengers; the change is +4,3% year-on-year, or +365,8 thou. passengers.

 

Vessels. 7 243 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. more by 37 vessels or by 0,5% comparing with the corresponding period of 2011. The Port rendered services to 1 966 cargo ships; the change is -7,2% or -153 ships and to 5277 passenger ships; the yoy change is +3,7% or +190 ships.

           

The aggregate throughput of RIGA PORT totalled 36 051,9 thou. tn; the change is +5,8% year– on - year or +1 979,8 thou. tn. Growing handling rates of coal (increased by +10,4% or +1 403,2 thou. tn yoy to 14 900,1 thou. tn) and containers (increased by +15,1% or by +477,2 thou. tn yoy to 3 632,1 thou. tn) made the greatest impact on the increased overall turnover in the Port.

 

Throughout analysed period of 2012 coal and oil products constituted the largest share in the overall handling volumes in this Port (41,3% and 21,3% respectively).

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 815 026 passengers; the year-on-year change is +5,0% or +38 815 passengers.

 

The SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS marked an increase by +6,7% or +1 894,0 thou. tn. year-on-year in overall turnover, which altogether totalled 30 346,0 thou. tn. Throughout January - December of 2012 the most rapid growth was achieved in  handling of oil products, which amounted to 16 095,0 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is +11,3% or +1 637,0 thou. tn. The throughput of coal handling was 7 866,0 thou. tn with year –on year change +18,9% or +1 250,0 thou. tn.

 

Oil products and coal constitute the largest part of cargo handling in this port (53,0% and 25,9% respectively).

Passenger traffic. 61 398 was the number of Ro-Pax line passengers calling the Port of Ventspils; the year-on-year change is +15,6% or +8 283 passengers. The number of cruise vessel tourists in 2012 was 848 (no cruise passengers recorded in 2011).

 

Vessels. In total the Port rendered services to 1 776 vessels; the year-on-year change is -3,4%, or -62 vessels.

           

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA reached 7 431,4 thou. tn; the year-on-year change is +53,0% or +2 574,5 thou. tn. Grain handling cuts out the largest share of handling volumes of this port (39,6%). The overall turnover of grain handling in January-December of 2012 increased by +103,6% or by +1 497,8 thou. tn year-on-year to 2 943,9 thou. tn.
