Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 22.08.2012.Print version
So far the biggest ship ever entered the Port of Riga left it on August 8. Almost 112 thousand tons of coal to be forwarded to the French port Dunkirk was loaded on board of the UBC ONSAN sailing under the flag of the Netherlands.

The ship is 260 m long, 43 m wide, and its draught is 14.5 m. UBC ONSAN’s entering the Port of Riga is a proof that Riga is ready to harbour the biggest ships able to enter the Baltic Sea, reports the press service of the port.

We remind that previously the biggest ship served in the Port of Riga was the Kyzikos sailing under the flag of Greece which was 230 m long, 37 m wide, and its draught was 14.2 m. 82.2 thousand tons of iron ore was loaded in its holds.

The ships mentioned above are bigger than so called Panamax, as ships wider than 33 m can not enter the Panama Canal.

“Attraction of such ships is our long-term goal; therefore planned deepening of shipping routes and building projects of new deepwater quaysides have to be carried out as soon as possible. If Riga delays to improve infrastructure, we can lose competitiveness and, thus, our leading positions in the Baltic Sea obtained due to developed and so far implemented improvements of Freeport’s infrastructure”, Andris Ameriks, Chairman of the Board of the Freeport of Riga Authority, said with certainty.
