Cargo handling at the Baltic Eastern ports grew by 9% in January-April

Throughout the analysed period the overall cargo handling in the Baltic Eastern Seaports totalled 115 521,4 thou. tn, the year-on-year change is +9,0% or +9 580,6 thou. tn. Basic cargo categories that had made the biggest impact on this growth were as follows: coal (+3 552,0 thou. tn yoy), crude oil (+2 421,7 thou. tn yoy), oil products (+1 617,6 thou. tn yoy) and containerised cargoes (+1 418,8 thou. tn yoy), reports BC press service of Klaipeda port.

In PRIMORSK PORT 26 605,0 thou. tn of oil and oil products, i.e. more by +7,1% or by 1 752,2 thou. tn than in January – April of 2011 were handled. Primorsk Port handles exclusively oil and oil products. Throughout the analysed period 24 549,0 thou. tn of crude oil and 2 055,6 thou. tn of oil products were handled in the Port.

 

In the SEAPORT of SAINT - PETERSBURG totally 17 722,0 thou. tn of cargo were handled, the change makes +4,1% or more by +698,4 thou. tn than during the corresponding period of 2011.

 

 

Volumes of general cargo achieved 12 835,9 thou. tn, the change year-on-year is +11,1 pct or +1 280,9 thou. tn, including:

Handling volumes of dry and bulk cargo totalled 4 848,2 thou. tn, the yoy change is +52,3% or +1 664,6 thou. tn, including

The overall turnover in the PORT of VYSOTSK was 4 100,7 thou. tn, the change makes -10,8% or -497,9 thou. tn year-on-year. This port handles only two categories of cargo. Oil products constitute the largest share in the overall turnover of the Port, i.e., 80,0% 3 281,9 thou. tn of oil products were handled throughout the analysed period, i.e. the handling rates decreased by -7,0% or by -247,5 thou. tn year-on-year. Volumes of coal handling were 818,8 thou. tn, the change is -23,4% or -250,4 thou. tn year-on-year.

 

The aggregated throughput of sea – born cargo in Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal in January – April of 2012 totalled 13,9 million tons, the overall year – on - year change was 5,0 percent down. 11,2 million tons were handled in Klaipeda Seaport throughout the analysed period, the year-on-year change was -7,0% or -838,2 thou. tn, meanwhile Būtingės terminal handled 2,7 million tn, the year-on-year change was +4,1% or +105,9 thou. tn. The negative change of Klaipęda Seaport cargo handling results is approx. 830 thou. tn, i.e., equals to the decreased handling turnover of bulk fertilizers.

 

The highest increase in cargo turnover throughout January – April of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 was reached due to increased handling volumes of iron ore (+160,4 thou. tn yoy), crude oil (+105,9 thou. tn yoy), raw and processed minerals and construction materials (+104,0 thou. tn yoy) and oil products (+101,0 thou. tn yoy).

 

The biggest drop down in cargo turnover throughout January – April of 2012 comparing with the corresponding period of 2011 occurred due to decreased handling volumes of bulk natural and chemical fertilizers (-829,8 thou. tn yoy) and raw sugar (-145,5 thou. tn yoy).

 

 In terms of cargo groups the handling volumes of liquid cargo increased by +3,9% to 6 424,9 thou. tn (46,2% of overall Port handling turnover). General cargo handling volumes decreased by 5,8% yoy, the overall turnover in this cargo group was 3 567,9 thou. tn (25,7% of overall Port handling turnover). Dry and bulk cargo handling volumes decreased by 16,1%, the handling rates of this cargo category were 3 901,8 thou. tn (28,1% of overall Port handling turnover).

 

2 209 vessels were reported to call Klaipėda Port and Būtingės terminal throughout the period of January – April of 2012.27 vessels (+3,8% or 1 vessel yoy) moored at Būtingės terminal. 1 599 international vessels (+6 vessels or +0,4% year-on-year) and 583 domestic ships ( -32 ships or -5,2% yoy) were reported to call Klaipėda Port. Throughout the foregoing period of the current year the number of vessels calling Klaipeda Port was less by 26 vessels or by 1,2% than throughout the corresponding period of 2011. The number of passengers calling the Port throughout the analysed period was 81 316, i.e. more by 4,8% or by 3 725 passengers comparing with the corresponding period of 2011.

 

The total throughput in TALLINN PORT was 11 134,2 thou. tn, the change is -13,3% or -1 708,5 thou. tn year-on-year.

Passenger traffic. This year the Joint Port of Tallinn rendered services to 2 328,7 thou. passengers, the change is +5,1 pct year-on-year, or +112,8 thou. passengers.


Vessels. 2 268 vessels were reported to call the Port of Tallinn, i.e. less by 22 vessels or by 1,0% comparing with the corresponding period of 2011.

 

The aggregated throughput of RIGA PORT totalled 12 519,1 thou. tn, the change is +14,9% year– on - year or +1 622,7 thou. tn. Growing handling rates of coal (increased by +20,2% or +846,5 thou. tn yoy to 5 043,0 thou. tn) and oil products (increased by +11,5% or by +327,3 thou. tn yoy to 3 183,9 thou. tn) made the greatest impact on the increased overall turnover in the Port.

Throughout analysed period of 2012 coal and oil products constituted the largest share in the overall handling volumes in this Port (40,3% and 25,4% respectively).

Passenger traffic. The Freeport of Riga received 208 189 passengers, the year-on-year change is +4,6% or +9 099 passengers.

 

The SEAPORT OF VENTSPILS marked an increase by +21,1% or +2 064,0 thou. tn. year-on-year in overall turnover, which altogether totalled 11 844,0 thou. tn. Throughout January - April of 2012 the most rapid growth was achieved in coal handling, which amounted to 3 264,0 thou. tn, the year-on-year change is +89,1% or +1 538,0 thou. tn. The throughput of oil products was 6 470,0 thou. tn with year –on year change +26,6% or +1 361,0 thou. tn.


Oil products and coal constitute the largest part of cargo handling in this port (54,6% and 27,6% respectively).

           

General cargo handling volumes were 788,0 thou. tn, the year-on-year change is -5,8 pct, or -49,0 thou. tn, including:

The total throughput in the PORT of LIEPAJA reached 2 263,2 thou. tn, the year-on-year change is +46,0% or +712,9 thou. tn. Grain handling constitutes the largest share of handling volumes of this port (40,9%). The overall turnover of grain handling in January-April of 2012 increased by +148,6% or by +553,4 thou. tn year-on-year to 933,8 thou. tn.
