Russian railway company Rail Garant officially launched construction activities in the new Muuga container terminal on Monday that should double the container transport volume in Estonia when the whole terminal is completed by 2015, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

According to plans, the terminal should receive the first shipment in the first months of next year.

The 60 million euro terminal should create jobs for nearly 200 people and when the second stage of it is completed, handle around 300,000 TEU in 2015, which would mean doubling of the current Estonian container transport volume.

Port of Tallinn board chairman Ain Kaljurand said that there is plenty of perspective for container cargo transport by the Baltic Sea region which is 2-4 behind the rest of Europe in this regard.

Sergei Gushtshin from Rail Garant said that the new container terminal enables to not just fulfil the clients orders but offer interesting and economically profitable routes.

Port of Tallinn built the infrastructure for the container terminal and Rail Garant won the right to operate it at a public contest.
