Cargo turnover at Latvian ports grew by 12.3% in 10 months

In the first ten months of the year 2011, a total of 56.9 million tons of cargo was handled at Latvian ports, which is 12.3% more when compared to the first ten months of 2010, according to information from the Transport Ministry.

The Freeport of Riga handled 28.13 million tons of cargo in January-October this year, or 12.3% more than in the respective period of time last year, writes LETA.

 

The cargo turnover at the Freeport of Ventspils reached 23.56 million tons in the first ten months, a 12.8% increase when compared to the same period last year.

 

On the other hand, the Port of Liepaja handled 3.94 million tons in the first ten months of 2011, registering a 10.5% increase on last year.

 

According to the Transport Ministry's data, bulk cargo made up the largest part of the cargo turnover at Latvia's large ports – 27.38 million tons; the volume of liquid cargo handled at Latvia's large ports reached 19.4 million tons; general cargo turnover stood at 10.18 million tons.
