As of today, the mobile communications operator Latvijas Mobilais telefons (LMT) offers fourth-generation (4G) mobile communication technology on commercial basis, LMT informs.

The first 4G base stations are located in Jurmala. Further development of the 4G network will continue parallel to the development of the 3G network. At the moment, 3G network is accessible in 80% of Latvia's territory, by the end of the year, penetration will increase to 90%.

The new technology provides for mobile Internet speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. The service is available for users of the "Internets datora 19" (Internet in Computer 19) connection type. LMT recommends using Internet modems ZTE MF820, which also work in the 3G and 2G networks.

LMT President Juris Binde says that LMT is first in Latvia to introduce 4G technology on commercial basis. "This is an opportunity for existing and potential LMT clients to use the latest mobile communication technologies, which may also encourage new business and recreation ideas in the future," notes Binde, adding that the new data transmission speeds are at times faster than those of traditional Internet connections.

Telecommunication companies Tele2 and Baltkom have also conducted 4G tests this year.
