The Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications invited neighboring countries to settle the container train route Kaliningrad-Klaipeda-Minsk-Moscow with a possibility of extension to Kazakhstan and Western part of China, as the Lithuanian Transport and Communications Ministry reports.

The move was made in order to promote transit freight transport between Europe and Asia via the territory of Lithuania, writes LETA/ELTA.

Lithuanian Deputy Minister Arunas Staras presented this initiative in Moscow at the Conference TransRussia 2011.

He proposed to arrange a meeting of ministers of transport of five countries – Lithuania, Belarus, Russia, Kazakhstan and China. The meeting should enable deeper discussions regarding the issues related to the creation of such an international transport corridor.

"By promoting freight transport between Europe and Asia we should create an efficient transport corridor with competitive and ecological transportation conditions. Among the corridor’s advantages should be the optimum model of border-crossing between the European Union and CIS by railway transport, reducing the border-crossing procedure to 30 minutes", said Arunas Staras.

Arunas Staras invited the interested countries for cooperation. He underlined the objective of Lithuania to get integrated into the chain of transport and logistics linking Europe and Asia, thus becoming efficient gateway of logistics between the two continents.
