Estonia might become the 11th state with the new mobile communications generation 4G network in the world, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

“Hunger for higher speeds and bigger volumes is completely irrestrainable,” said Estonian Information Technology and Telecommunications Association deputy president, EMT board member Tõnu Grünberg in ETV’s morning programme.

TeliaSonera launched the first 4G commercial network in Sweden and Norway on December 14 last year. Now it is in 10 states and Estonia may become the 11th.

EMT posted the test version of 4G in February and in summer other operators followed. The networks are not open to public yet. By December 8, licence applications for 4G frequencies were handed to the economy ministry and in the coming days it should become clear who get the three licences.

Grünberg said that building the 6,000 km fibre-optical network EstWin has progressed well in Estonia and in 2015 it will enable to bring data communications with the speed of 100 megabits per second to homes. Here 4G technology has an important role.
