The economic cooperation between Latvia and U.S. must be as strong as the military cooperation between both countries, and a good example of this is the transit of non-military cargo to Afghanistan through Latvia, emphasized the deputies of the Saeima Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee in their meeting yesterday with U.S. Ambassador to Latvia Judith G. Garber.

Ainars Latkovskis.

Committee Chairman Ainars Latkovskis (Unity) also expressed hope that Latvian enterprises will be able to not only provide the services of logistics but also deliver Latvian products to U.S. troops in Afghanistan, writes LETA.

"The non-military cargoes through Latvia to Afghanistan are sent via the northern transport corridor, which is a good example of economic cooperation. So far, 20,000 containers have been sent to Afghanistan and each of them provides EUR 500 for our national economy," pointed out Latkovskis.

However, the U.S. Ambassador admitted that the production from Latvian enterprises will have to meet strict quality and price standards. During the recent visit of the representatives of US Defense Logistics Agency, more than ten enterprises were chosen for negotiations. The first contract concerning water supply has already been signed.

The Ambassador also expressed her gratitude to Latvia for taking part in NATO operations in Afghanistan, where our troops are fighting side by side with U.S. troops. She also highly appreciates that Latvia, despite economic hardships, still carries out its international commitments.
