Ventspils port raises cargo turnover 1% in 2018

Last year, cargo turnover in the northwestern Latvian port of Ventspils rose 1 % from a year ago to more than 20 mln tons, according to information released by the port.

The port’s spokeswoman Inga Ievina said that last year cargos of coal showed the biggest rise, while cargos of manganese ore, mineral fertilizers and ro-ro cargos carried by ferries also increased.


Ievina said that transportation of ferry cargos and passengers hit a new record last year. Ferries carried 221,430 passengers last year or by 5% or 11,536 passengers more than in 2017, while the volume of ro-ro cargos increased by 5 % or 106,000 tons to 2.2 mln tons.


She said that Ventspils freeport administration keeps investments in development of the port infrastructure, improving operations of terminals and competitiveness.


In 2017, Ventspils port terminals reloaded 20.35 mln tons of cargo, up 6.5% from 2016.

Ventspils is the second largest port in Latvia by cargo turnover.
