Cargo turnover at Riga port up 8.2% in 2018

The Riga Freeport reloaded 36.432 mln tons of cargo in 2018, which is by 8.2% more than in 2017, the port reported.

Bulk cargos accounted for 23.688 mln tons of the annual cargo turnover last year, up 13.3% from 2017. Handling of general cargos rose 22.6% y-o-y to 8.622 mln tons, and reloading of liquid cargos fell 28% to 4.121 mln tons.


Coal prevailed among the cargos reloaded in the Freeport of Riga in 2018 at 39% or 14.22 mln tons, up 20.8% y-o-y.


Oil products made up 11.2% of all cargos handled in the port last year, down 27.6% from the previous year and making up 4.085 mln tons.


In December 2018, the port reloaded 3.287 mln tons of cargo, including 2.2 mln tons of bulk cargos, 772,900 tons of general cargos and 313,400 tons of liquid cargos.

In 2017, the Freeport of Riga handled 33.675 mln tons.


Riga is the largest Latvian port in terms of both cargo turnover and passengers.
