The construction works of the second stage of Krievu Sala port terminal have been completed, and the terminal is ready to serve cargos, the Riga Freeport Administration reported.

Riga Freeport Administration has concluded all additional infrastructure works in the territory of Strek and Riga Coal Terminal.

“The several years long work on construction of the terminal has been completed and the Riga port now has a cargo terminal that meets all global standards and the highest environment standards,” the Riga Freeport board chairman Andris Ameriks said.

As reported, the purpose of the Krievu Sala infrastructure development project is to move the port operations, in particular reloading of coal, away from the Riga center, transferring them to a more remote location in the Krievu Sala area. The project was started in 2012.

The total cost of the project is EUR 151.8 mln, of which eligible costs are EUR 123.24 mln and the co-funding from the EU Cohesion Fund is EUR 75.83 mln.

The European Commission is due to review the implementation of the project in late March 2019 when it will determined whether the project would get the full amount of the planned EU funding.
