The Lithuanian and Estonian units of the infrastructure project company YIT Infra, which is part of Finland's construction group YIT, have won a contract to upgrade the first 4-kilometer section of the Soviet-built Vilnius-Utena highway, informed LETA/BNS.

The contract, worth 19.935 mln euros, with a consortium of IT Infra Lietuva and YIT Infra Eesti was signed on December 4, told Vitalijus Andrejevas, director of the Lithuanian Road Administration. (LRA), told LETA/BNS.

Other bidders included Latvia's A.C.B. (23.621 mln euros), Latvia's Binders (26.408 mln euros), Panevezio Keliai (23.388 mln euros), Kauno Tiltai (20.782 mln euros), and a consortium of Eurovia Lietuva, Fegda and Tilsta (21.112 mln euros).

A second call for tenders, worth up to 24.4 mln euros, was issued in early November for designing and building overpasses in two locations on the highway, with the deadline for submitting bids set at December 17.

Built back in 1985, the concrete road between Vilnius and Utena, some 100 kilometers northeast of the capital, is increasingly costly to maintain.
