Klaipedos Smelte: we're becoming global container handling port

BC, Vilnius, 22.06.2018.Print version
The Lithuanian port of Klaipeda is becoming a global container handling port and hopes to improve its handling results, says Rimantas Juska, head of Klaipedos Smelte, a cargo handling company in the port of Klaipeda, indirectly managed by international shipping company Mediterranean Shipping Company, informs LETA/BNS.

In his words, the port is receiving a growing number of large container vessels, and MSC has announced recently its decision to start transshipment in Klaipeda.

"We had 18 MSC ships already in May, instead of the usual four. We plan to receive 20 in June. (…) It means the port of Klaipeda is in fact becoming a global container handling port," Juska told a press conference on Thursday.

The rise will improve the results of the whole port of Klaipeda, he said. "We have a clear vision until the end of this year that freight weight will range from 35 to 45 TEU every month. It means the whole number of containers in the port of Klaipeda will exceed usual records this year," Juska said.

Klaipeda is set to welcome the largest container ship, Francesca, to ever enter the port in its history on Saturday, and Juska hinted that an even bigger vessel will arrive in Klaipeda in a couple of weeks.

According to Juska, Poland's Gdansk is the only other Baltic sea port that is able to accept such vessels. Containers from such large vessels are moved to smaller ships and distributed among regional ports.
