During the first eleven months of 2017, the stevedore companies based in the south-western Latvian port of Liepaja reloaded 6.058 million tons of cargo in total, which was a 17.6% rise from the same period a year ago, informs LETA, according to the management of the Liepaja Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The port of Liepaja also handled 1,316 ships and 38,415 ship passengers in January-November this year.

In November 2017, the post set a new record-high in monthly cargo turnover, having reloaded 810,482 tons of various cargos at a 34.9% growth from November 2016. The previous monthly record in cargo handling at Liepaja was 716,800 tons reloaded in December 2012.

Uldis Hmielevskis, Deputy CEO for Development at Liepaja SEZ, said two factors had contributed to the new cargo record - improvements in rail transport arrangements as well as construction and upgrading of warehousing facilities in the port. In particular, the bulk cargo storage capacity has been increased by 10%.

Bulk cargos prevail in the total cargo turnover at the Liepaja port, accounting for 651,300 tons or 80.4% in November this year. General cargos were reloaded in the amount of 113,900 tons or 14%, and liquid cargos made up 45,200 tons or 5.6% of the total cargo turnover. In November 2017, the port received 115 ships and served 4,250 inbound and outbound passengers.

Most of the bulk cargos handled at the port in November 2017 were grain, accounting for 409,400 tons which is 63% of all bulk cargos and 50.5% of the total cargo turnover.
