Riga airport serves nearly 12% more passengers in January-October

During the first ten months of 2017, Riga International Airport served 5.15 million passengers, which is a growth by nearly 12% compared to the same period in 2016, writes LETA, according to the preliminary figures reported by the airport.

In October 2017, the airport served 553,600 passengers, or by 16% more than in October 2016.

 

Freight handled by the Riga airport in the first ten months of this year grew 21.2% year-on-year to 19,858 tons. In October 2017, freight rose 59.3% compared to October 2016.

 

"The forecasts for passengers and freight in the remaining months of this year give serious grounds for hope that the Riga airport will close 2017 with new record-high numbers of passengers and freight," said the airport's CEO, Ilona Lice, praising the contribution of the Latvian national airline airBaltic to the airport's growth.

 

The number of flights handled at the airport in the first ten months of this year increased 8.9% year-on-year to 62,702. In October this year, the Riga airport handled 6,806 aircraft which is a growth by 11.6% from the same month in 2016.

 

The state-owned Riga International Airport is the largest air traffic hub in the Baltic states. The airport offers flights to more than 60 destinations in the winter season and to nearly 90 destinations in summer, operated by 20 airlines.

 

In 2016, Riga Airport handled over 5.4 million passengers, or nearly 45% of all air passengers in the Baltic states.
