Airbus/Bombardier deal will also increase airBaltic's value

BC, Riga, 19.10.2017.Print version
The deal between the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus and Canadian manufacturer Bombardier on the purchase of majority shares in Bombardier's C-Series jet project also increases the value of Latvia's national airline airBaltic, aviation expert Talis Linkaits told LETA.

He pointed out that this agreement is positive for airBaltic, as there is now greater guarantee that the C-Series program will continue. Up until now, airlines were very cautious in evaluating Bombardier's ability to implement the C-Series program.

Linkaits said that this also means that airBaltic will have a better chance of selling its used CS300 aircraft in the future, and their sales value will increase, which in turn will also increase the value of the Latvian airline.

According to the expert, this deal will also improve airBaltic's attractiveness to potential strategic investors.

Meanwhile, airBaltic spokeswoman Alise Briede confirmed to LETA that Bombardier has informed the Latvian airline about its new strategic partnership.

''This is certainly very positive news for airBaltic, as a client of the CSeries aircraft, as this means that the airline now has an even stronger cooperation partner,'' she said.

The BBC reported earlier this week that European aerospace firm Airbus is to take a majority stake in Bombardier's C-Series jet project.

Bombardier has faced a series of problems over the plane, most recently a trade dispute in the US that imposed a 300% import tariff.

Airbus and Bombardier's chief executives said the deal - which will see Airbus take a 50.01 percent stake - would help to boost sales.

The deal also gives Airbus the right to buy full control of the C-Series project in 2023.

Meanwhile, airBaltic's fleet includes seven Bombardier CS300 aircraft, and was the first airline in the world to begin commercial flights with the aircraft.

By the end of this year the airline will have eight Bombardier CS300 aircraft, and by the end of 2019, it will have 20 Bombardier CS300 aircraft in its fleet.
