The listed Estonian shipper Tallink Grupp carried 2.9 million passengers in the third quarter, 2% more than in the same period a year ago. Cargo carriage grew 12.5% to 91,300 units in the third quarter and the number of carried passenger cars declined 7.1% to 353,000 units, Tallink told the stock exchange, cites LETA/BNS.

"The third quarter of 2017 has been positive for Tallink Grupp. Altogether 57,600 more passengers have travelled on our ships than in the same period a year ago and at the beginning of the quarter in July we achieved a new passenger record, when a total of 1.2 million passengers travelled on our ships in one month," Veiko Haavapuu, finance director of Tallink Grupp, said.

"The number of passengers in the third quarter has moved in a positive direction on nearly all of our routes compared to the same period last year. The largest increase in passengers compared to the same period last year, by 71%, has occurred on the Latvia-Sweden route, after adding a second vessel, Romantika, to the route in December 2016," Haavapuu said.

The number of carried passengers fell 5% on year on the Estonia-Finland route, which according to Haavapuu is due to the fact that there is one less cruise vessel operating on the route than there were last year. "Until the end of August 2016 we had four vessels operating the Tallinn-Helsinki route: two shuttle vessel and two cruise ships. We redirected one of the cruise ships to the Latvia-Sweden route at the end of last year and this year we have operated the Tallinn-Helsinki cruise route with only one cruise ship, therefore the smaller number of passengers is not a surprise."

Cargo carriage increase on all route in the third quarter, but increased the most, by 120%, on the Latvia-Sweden route. "The growth in cargo carriage between Estonia and Finland is still the largest in terms of the units carried," Haavapuu said. Altogether 60,400 units were carried on the Estonia-Finland route in the third quarter of this year.
